Help to clarify a question for an essay please? - I'M NOT ASKING FOR YOU TO DO MY HOMEWORK!?

I would ume that by contingency you are being asked if either side had any backup plans in case of such things as a break in their lines...or if a forward move was repulsed...in other words if we do this and it does not go as planned what do we do?
