I'm getting a new parakeet.Tips?

Some family friends of ours got a parakeet for their young child, but the kid soon got bored of it because they were not patient enough to tame it and wanted to pick it up right away (the bird kept flying away). But anyways, they are generously letting me borrow the bird for a week to see if I would really like one for my own. I have never owned one before, and need some tips. I've done a lot of research, but would love some parakeet owners advice. Thanks in advance :)
