Poll: which philosopher's ethical system do you prefer and why?
I personally love #1. It's very existential. It doesn't prescribe rules for action, but simply argues for "right being." I think it's much easier and more rewarding to encourage virtue (excellence) and discourage self-destructive traits (vices) than it is to follow a rule like the Categorical Imperative. The bonus for #1 is that even when you are not confronted with an ethical dilemma, you are becoming a better person. For example, developing the virtue of temperance has its rewards apart from ethical decisions, since temperance teaches one to be content. I would say that developing virtue is not only beneficial in ethics, but also in finding happiness.
